FAA Fast Track ADHD Evaluations
for Pilots
A history of ADHD or past use of ADHD medication can affect FAA medical certification, but some pilots may qualify for the FAA’s ADHD Fast Track pathway rather than the more extensive Standard Track evaluation.
At Collective Wellbeing Psychology, we provide FAA-focused ADHD evaluations and documentation for pilots who appear to meet Fast Track criteria.
Who May Qualify for the FAA ADHD Fast Track?
According to the FAA, Fast Track may be appropriate when all of the following apply:
-
No treatment or use of ADHD medication for any reason within the past four years
-
No ADHD symptoms within the past four years
-
No instability in academic, occupational, or social functioning within the past four years
-
No other current or historical psychiatric condition, with a limited exception for individuals who independently qualify for the FAA Anxiety, Depression, and Related Conditions Fast Track pathway Federal Aviation Administration
If these criteria are not met, the FAA generally requires the Standard Track ADHD evaluation instead. Federal Aviation Administration
What Does a Fast Track Evaluation Include?
The FAA Fast Track process involves a review of required records and an evaluation completed by a psychologist or neuropsychologist with training and experience evaluating ADHD.
The evaluation may be completed in person or virtually when permitted by state and federal regulations, although a virtual evaluation must include face-to-face video rather than audio only. Federal Aviation Administration
Your psychologist reviews the relevant documentation, evaluates your history and current functioning, and completes the FAA ADHD Summary and supporting clinical report required for your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). Federal Aviation Administration
What Records Will I Need?
The FAA requires supporting documentation to verify your ADHD history and functioning. The specific records needed depend on your history and should follow the FAA's current ADHD Document Checklist.
Because incomplete records or an inability to verify your history may result in referral to the Standard Track pathway, we recommend gathering required documentation before your evaluation whenever possible. Federal Aviation Administration
Fast Track vs. Standard Track
Fast Track is not simply a shorter version of comprehensive ADHD testing. It is intended for pilots whose recent history meets specific FAA criteria.
Pilots who are currently taking ADHD medication, discontinued medication within the previous 90 days, have current ADHD symptoms, or otherwise do not qualify for Fast Track may require Standard Track evaluation and FAA review. The Standard Track has different requirements and must be completed by an appropriately qualified FAA aviation neuropsychologist. Federal Aviation Administration
Not Sure Which Pathway You Need?
Your AME and the FAA ultimately determine which pathway applies. If you are unsure whether your history fits the Fast Track criteria, we can review the requirements with you before scheduling the evaluation.
