In her own words: "Clients do not need to begin therapy with the right words, a perfectly defined goal, or a complete explanation of what needs to change. I believe therapy can begin with whatever feels most present, allowing understanding, trust, and direction to develop naturally through the relationship."

Joan Paul, Psy.D.
Postdoctoral Psychological Associate

Dr. Joan Paul is deeply curious about how people become who they are. She believes that even our most frustrating patterns usually make sense when we understand where they began, what they helped us survive, or how they once helped us stay connected to the people around us. Her work is not about reducing someone to a diagnosis or handing them a list of coping strategies. It is about understanding the whole person—and helping clients build lives and relationships that feel more authentic, connected, and freely chosen.

Dr. Paul works with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, substance use concerns, identity exploration, major life transitions, mood-related difficulties, and longstanding emotional or interpersonal patterns. She is especially passionate about working with people exploring culture, identity, belonging, and intergenerational experiences. She recognizes that people cannot be understood separately from their families, relationships, communities, identities, and broader social environments. Together, she and her clients explore how these influences—including earlier experiences and relationships—continue to shape how clients understand themselves, connect with others, and respond to difficult emotions.

Her approach is warm, genuine, and actively engaged. She asks thoughtful questions, helps clients recognize connections they may not have noticed on their own, and remains present when the work becomes difficult. Clients are not expected to carry the conversation alone, nor does Dr. Paul assume she already knows what an experience means for them. Understanding develops collaboratively, with every part of the client’s story welcomed as meaningful rather than treated as a background detail.

Dr. Paul earned her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, California, with an emphasis in Multicultural Perspectives. She brings nearly a decade of clinical experience across community mental health, college counseling, multidisciplinary treatment settings, and private practice. Her background also includes diversity, equity, and inclusion consultation and teaching, which have further shaped her commitment to understanding each client within the cultural, relational, and systemic context of their life.

Outside of her clinical work, Joan enjoys singing, tending to an ever-growing collection of houseplants, spending time with her two cats, and crafting whimsical miniature worlds.
